Funding
The Government’s advertised “30 hrs a week free funding,” is based on a 38 week, school year. Split into three school terms, Autumn (September-December 14 weeks,) Spring (January-Easter 11 weeks,) and Summer (April-August 13 weeks.) Each term having a different number of holidays (weeks that are not covered by funding) This funding is now available to most children, from the first school term after they turn 9 months old.

Funding has been in the news a lot over the last 12 months. The way funding is applied and the rules around how settings can apply funding is confusing. The whole system has become frustratingly complicated for families and settings alike. It has led to a range of confusing fee structures at different settings and makes it more difficult for parents to compare costs from one setting to the next. So we apologise for how overly complicated our fee structure has become.
At Wonder Years we apply funding to the 38 weeks it is intended to cover and charge our normal rates for the 13 weeks not covered by the funding. As a nursery we offer a complete day of care and have expenses not covered by the funding. These include breakfast, snacks, lunch, trips and outings, enrichment activities and experiences in nursery from other companies. We provide nappies, creams, sunscreen, hats, wash clothing, keep spare clothes and lots of other things that make life easier for families using our setting. As funding doesn’t cover such things, we ask for a contribution towards those funded sessions of £6.50 per session, we call this our consumables charge. It can be broken down into three areas:
| Food Items | Breakfast, Morning and afternoon snacks and Drinks, 2 Course Hot Lunch. |
| Non-Food Consumables | Nappies, wipes, bedding, spare clothes, washing, suncream, sunhats etc |
| Enrichment Activities | Staffing for outings, Extra curricular themed events, visits from 3rd party companies brining in animals or doing shows etc. |
We offer Funded only sessions with no additional costs in the afternoons. These are standalone sessions. For Funded only sessions we spread the funded hours across 51 weeks, so 30 hrs funding x 38 weeks = 22.35 x 51 weeks. Our standalone sessions run from 1.30pm -6pm (4.5hrs). Five afternoons = 22.50hrs each week. There is no need to provide food or drink but children in nappies would need to provide their own.
For all other sessions, the monthly fees are averaged so your bill is the same each month regardless of the number of sessions in each month. This makes it easy to set up a standing order and pay the same amount at the same time each month.
To get to the monthly average, we add together the costs of the 38 weeks of the funded year, (weekly Consumable charge + any hours attended over the eligible funded hours x 38) to the weekly sessions cost for the 13 weeks there is no funding. Then we divide that yearly total by 51 weeks the nursery is open.
For example: Attending 3 days per week and receiving 30hrs funding, the costs would be;
3 days = 6 sessions @ £6.50 = £39 per week x 38 weeks divided by 12 months = £123.5/month
3 days @ full daily rate £72.30 x 13 weeks divided by 12 months = £234.98/month
The two figures combined give a total monthly cost of £358.48 each month or £84.35 each week.
For families looking for Term time only, Fees are calculated as if attendance is all year, then a 25% discount is applied. (51 weeks – 25% = 38 weeks term time)
It is difficult to go through all of the possibilities attending different weekly patterns cost. Our fee table covers most options but the whole process is explained in full on a visit to the nursery before taking a place.
